My name is Kazuma Yokota, and I’m 9 years old. I was born with hydrocephalus, a condition that required brain surgery when I was just one week old. To help drain the excess fluid from my brain, a VP shunt was placed – something I will live with for the rest of my life.
As a result of the brain damage, the right side of my body is weaker, similar to the effects of a stroke. This makes many everyday activities physically challenging. But there’s one thing I can do—and that’s ride a horse!
I ride at Manes for Movement, where I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work with horses like Goldie, Tator Tot, and my favorite, Chance. Every Thursday is the highlight of my week because I get to see my horse friends. Riding has become more than just a hobby—it’s helped me build strength, improve my posture and balance, and grow my self-confidence.
I’ve even learned some trick riding—like riding sideways, backwards, and even on my hands and knees! I also help clean the horses’ hooves and love feeding them treats like carrots and apples, which I prepare with my sister, Tessa.
Chance and the other horses at Manes for Movement are not just animals to me—they’re my friends. They’ve made a huge difference in my life.
Please consider supporting Manes for Movement this month. Your generosity helps ensure horses like Chance are well-fed, cared for, and ready to continue helping kids like me thrive.
Thank you for being a part of our journey!
