Every Saturday morning, Jackson gets to do something that makes him very proud: he rides a horse. When people ask what he did over the weekend, Jackson will always say that he rode his horse. If someone is surprised he can ride a horse, he likes to play it cool and act like it's no big deal. But, it is a big deal, and riding gives Jackson a huge sense of accomplishment!
Jackson is now 12 years old, but he has been riding at Manes for Movement since he was just 4 years old. His time at the barn never gets old. It's the highlight of the week, week after week, year after year. He has been lucky enough to ride many amazing therapy horses, including Sparky, Lizzie, Dolly, Rufus, and Tator Tot.
Jackson has a neurodevelopmental disorder that makes it difficult for his brain to communicate with the rest of his body. This disorder leads to many challenges. Jackson works incredibly hard everyday to do things others do with little effort. He regularly attends many therapy sessions each week, but hippotherapy at Manes for Movement isn't like the other therapies. None of us think of it as therapy.
Jackson is visibly animated and excited when he arrives at the barn. He doesn't notice, but he is gaining strength, balance and postural improvement from his weekly rides. Jackson loves to use his time at the barn to socialize! He is full of questions - most importantly, he must know what the horses, therapists, volunteers, and other riders ate for breakfast that morning!
Manes for Movement provides an invaluable service to the disabled community in the South Bay. We feel incredibly lucky to be a part of the Manes for Movement family and would be devastated if for some reason Jackson and others like him could no longer ride.
